locate is a utility that indexes files on your system to make finding them faster. Recent systems come with slocate, a security-enhanced version of locate (and the one you should probably use if you have it). The indexing information is stored in a database which is created by running either slocate -u or updatedb (your choice). As root, try running updatedb and then try your installation again.

Hope this helps.

Mickey --

You might take a look at the following URL for some excellent info on dealing with Winmodems under Linux (yes, they can work, and work well, but it may not be straightforward ...). Anyhow, check out: http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/ and see what you think. Also, you can download a utility to identify the modem's chipset, which will help to determine your next steps.

Hope this helps -- additional info appreciated.

I dont know if this still applies but I was able to "find" modems,on older MDK versions by going into the comps bios and disableing Plug and Play.

I second Lynch's congrats -- and his request for the gory details! Winmodems are notoriously frustrating to deal with under Linux, so any and all contributions are welcome.

In the Kppp settings I had to select the modem. By default it was not selected. I had to check each listing with the query modem option. Once I selected the right listing everything worked !!!

Yeah,I've seen a lot of folks get stuck on that one.Consider yourself in elite company:you actually took the trouble to get a Winmodem configured and running in Linux!
Again, congrats and thanks for the reply.
