Hi, first, I keep seeing Mandrake here with a couple of Redhat 9's. I recently installed Redhat 9 in an attempt to learn linux (more on that in just a sec), but should I start over with Mandrake? Is it pretty much all the same or is one better than the other (excluding opinions, remembering though that I come from Windows).

Anyway, on to the Linux problems. I have a list of things I'm trying to get working here, but they're having issues.

First, I'm trying to install the JVM. Well, I think I installed it (I installed the rpm, then after that didn't work I installed the normal .bin file option), but Netscape still won't let me onto the chat room here.

Next, I want to reconfigure my mouse. Call me a tweaker, but I like things the way I want them. Right now my wheel works, but my side buttons are set to home and search (or something like that). I'd prefer back/forward. I keep seeing IMwheel, but I can't figure out how to type that in. Is there a gui for IMwheel, or can someone help me figure out these commands?

Finally, I have a multimedia keyboard. I figure that Linux should be able to handle it. I'm not sure if it's reading in key presses or not (I'll check that out tomorrow), but has anyone found a way?

Oh, one other thing. I notice that Windows can get my sound a lot louder than Linux. I'm thinking I'm just missing a volume control somewhere, any ideas?

Basically they're about the same;they're all Linux
But....
If you want mp3 support,use Mandrake.
If you dual-boot with w2k/xp using ntfs and you want to read(not write to) your w2k/xp files,use Mandrake.
What browser?
Look in etc/x11/xf86config and post the following section:

Section "InputDevice"

  Option       "Device" "/dev/mouse"
  Option       "Name" "Autodetection"

That'll help sort out the mouse problem.I use a regular MS wheel mouse on the machine I'm posting from.
Look in the menus for kmix,gamix etc.Sound is turned down by default sometimes.

Even after you install java you need to add the plugin to your browser. Check out this Mozilla page (that netscape is based off of)

Thanks for all the help s far! After trying about three different installation instructions, I finally got JAVA to work (thank you deuce, that link was a life saver!).

Anyway, on to my other issues. First, wha's really annoying me at times right now is that my keyboard keeps dropping keys. It's as if I'm typing too fast for my keyboard. It's driving me nuts!!!!!!! I'm currently using a multimedia keyboard over USB. Oh, and this could just be me, but it seems I'm having an above average number of letters swapped too.

As for my mouse, I use a microsoft usb optical intellimouse (4.1? smething wtih a wheel and 2 side buttons). Here's what my config file currently says:

OH! One other question. It seems as if I have to point gcc and/or g++ to my c++ libraries Right now they can't find them. I know where they're locatd, how do I point the path or whatever to that? Thanks!
