You've probably tried these ideas already, but just in case ...

I'd check the physical connections first (cables, power, etc.) and make sure everything is correctly aligned and tight (not likely the problem, but an easy fix if it turns out to work). Next, I'd check the BIOS settings (battery died, maybe?) to verify that they're correct -- the CDROM is set as the (first) boot device, etc. You might also watch the initial screens when your system boots, to verify that the device is recognized (assuming it is an IDE CDROM drive). Finally, I'd try swapping the CDROM for another one, just in case it's gone South on you. The problem could also be media (although bad media would not explain why the drive itself is not recognized). To eliminate this possibility, you might try substituting another CD -- any CD -- for the Linux CD, and see if anything changes (like the drive is suddenly recognized). Similarly, you might also try booting from a Windoze 98 rescue or install disk, and see if the CDROM is recognized; if it isn't, then at least you know that the problem isn't O/S-specific, and probably has to be something like hardware.

Hope this helps -- additional info appreciated.
