Another Linux Newbie...needs help
Okay I finally got XP and RH8 dual booting on a single HD.

I also managed to get the modem installed and can browse web.

So what is the Linux equivalent to Windows
"My Computer"?
Is there a user guide somewhere that translates Linux to Windows? I can't even figure out how to see my floppy drive

I did the automatic install of RH8 and chose to set it up as a personal workstation with only the recommended components.

It only needed the first two CDs for the whole install.

Welcome to TSG!

Congratulations on setting up your RedHat installation to dual-boot with XP -- no small accomplishment, regardless of your level of expertise. Now, for the other questions ...

There's a very good free tutorial at http://www.icon.co.za/~psheer/book/index.html.gz that will get you started (be sure to look at the section on Common Device Names -- that should point you in the right direction for accessing your floppy). Understand that Linux is orders of magnitude more complex, powerful and configurable than Windoze, so it will take some time before you begin to be comfortable in this new environment -- but if you stick with it, you will be rewarded hundreds of times over for your efforts.

You might also check out these excellent links, courtesy of Lynch:

Hope this helps ...

Thanks for the info!
Is there a way that I can transfer my links and favorites from IE6
to Mozilla?
They are on a floppy.

Import bookmarks from a floppy.Hmmm.
Are the IE favs in a html file?If so,try this(if not,try it anyway )This will help with getting your floppy readable, too.

open a terminal and type su -
then type in the root password you created during installation
now type this: mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy check the /mnt directory to be sure the mount point is named that way.It should be.
now open mozilla and click on "Bookmarks"
then select "Manage Bookmarks"
when the "Manage Bookmarks" window appears,go to the Tools menu and select Import
when the Import dialog box opens browse to the /mnt/floppy directory and select the bookmarks folder there
Hit Open
That should do the trick. When your done go back to the terminal and type:
umount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
Do this as you should always remember to unmount the floppy. And that's not a typo: the command is umount.
To avoid having to mount the floppy through the terminal all the time,r-click the desktop and select Create New>Floppy Device.Go to the Devices tab and in the drop-down list select the floppy drive. It should either be listed as /dev/fd0 or /dev/floppy or maybe /mnt/floppy.Hit OK.
This will create a desktop icon for mounting the floppy.Just insert floppy and l-click the icon. When you're done r-click the icon and select Unmount before you remove the floppy disk.

A small addendum to Lynch's otherwise excellent post: I believe the command you will use to unmount the floppy is either umount /dev/fd0 or umount /mnt/floppy (i.e., you can use either the device name (/dev/fd0) or the mount point (/mnt/floppy) -- but you don't need both).

Hope this helps.

Well thanks again for the help.

I did figure out how to get the bookmarks transferred using the import function.

When you use the export Favorites Wizard in IE6 the file is saved as .htm, thats what I had on the floppy so it worked out fine.

Next task is to figure out how to run .mpg video files. There doesn't seem to be any type of video player installed.

There seems to be a lot more keyboarding in Linux than DOS...
