Question Newbie trying to setup an imap server
OK. I have Red Hat 9 installed and running. I've overcome a few hurdles already, but this one has me stumped at the moment. I'd still consider myself pretty much a total newbie, so thought I'd try here for a bit of help (having already found some tips reading other threads after googling for stuff).

I've downloaded and unpacked Cyrus Imap (2.0.17). I've read the documentation, and when I attempted to configure it, discovered that I needed Berkley DB 3.x.x . I went to the website, and downloaded the latest version (4.1.24 - my first mistake, as it's not version 3?). I configured, make'd and installed this (do I need to run it in some way?) and then tried to configure cyrus again. Same error. I tried to uninstall Berkley DB version 4, but wasn't sure quite how to do that, I think I did a "make clean", but I'm fairly sure that that didn't work. I then downloaded version 3.1.17, and configured, make'd and installed that. I then tried to configure cyrus yet again, and still got the same error message. I'm assuming that I need to run Berkley DB in some way, but I'm a bit stuck now. Any suggestions?

My intention is to get an imap server running, and then use fetchmail to pull my email in from my various different email accounts. Then I'll access all my email via my one imap account in outlook on my WinXP machine. Ultimately I may try to get squirrel mail running too, but I'm not worrying about that just yet.

you can have both DB3 and DB4 installed... you do not need to start them their just libraries for the most part.. tha application will know what to do with them...

you might need to specify the location of the DB3 files when you run the cyrus configure script.

Thanks for the help, it's greatly appreciated.

I've had another read of the documentation, and finally found a --with-dbdir= option to run with the configuration. I found out where the library was installed (which took me a little while, as I wasn't sure where to look), and this time tried the configure with --with-dbdir=/user/local/BerkeleyDB.3.1/ But I get the same error again.

The create is looking for db_create. This isn't present in BerkeleyDB.3.1/bin but the BerkeleyDB documentation does refer to it. Any further ideas or suggestions?

if you go into your source directory for the DB3 (you installed this from source right or rpm) do the normal ./configure and do a make look to see what binaries are made that it did not copy on over.. then manually copy them..

you could also try doing another make install also and see if that helps to fix it..

seems DB3 is not installed properly or something.

I have had better luck with courier-imap in the past, it may be worth taking a look at.
