Unhappy Samba troubles
I read a previous thread on installing Samba and followed the instructions from the web page that was suggested, but I still can not get Samba to load.
I checked the ps -ef | egrep mbd and it's still just me.
I had downloaded the Samba for 9.0 from the Unoffical How to site and used the 'rpm -ivh samba-3.0.0beta3-1.i386.rpm' and it keeps telling me
'No such file or directory'
Yes I did this as root.........tree.........bark.........branch and every way I could think of.
I'm getting frustrated, I can see it and I know it's there and it knows it's there.
Help please

The "no such file or directory" error appears to be complaining about the rpm package you specified. You've probably already checked these things, but just in case ... (1) make sure you're in the same location as the package you downloaded (or provide the full pathname to the package). (2) check case carefully; Linux/Unix is case-sensitive. (3) (and this is admittedly a long shot): are you certain that you downloaded an rpm file and not a tar.gz or tar.bz2 file (these are the types typically available from samba.org)? You will need a different command to extract the components from a compressed tar file. (4) make sure you're entering the rpm command without quotes (single, double, backquote). (5) try using only the first few characters of the filename and wildcard the rest, e.g., rpm -ivh samb*

Assuming that none of these work (which is what I'd expect, given everything that you've already done) you can try the following command (as root):

strace rpm -ivh samba-3.0.0beta3-1.i386.rpm > strace.out 2>&1

and post the strace.out file.

Hope this helps.

Okay got it to load then errors showed up with conflicts with samba-2.7.7a-6, is this a major problem?
Also I was just reading another post from 7/8 that mentioned the website to go to for help with Samba. If I'm reading this correctly, since my windows XP computers (3 of them) can't see the Linux, I need to tweak the registry on the XP side.
I also can't install the printer in Linux and I think it might be because the actual drivers are loaded on a separate drive with XP. What a mess, I tried to install the printer using the Windows SMB that went through the Network, but that computer can't get to the printer when I'm on Linux. Did you get all that?
Wow this is more and more hair pulling than ever.

The errors after installation don't sound encouraging; depending on how you installed things, you may have portions of two samba versions on your system. The specific error message(s) would be helpful here.

If you cannot ping the linux machine from your Windoze machines, you likely have network configuration issues. Although it is possible you will need to tweak a registry setting to solve the problem, it's far more likely that the problem is in the basic configuration on your linux machine.

Not likely. Normally, Linux uses its own drivers for a printer, and can't use anything made for a different O/S. You probably want to set up your printer in Linux and make sure it is working correctly before trying to export it to Windoze machines (there's plenty of excitement setting up the printer without throwing networking/samba into the mix ). There's a wealth of information at www.linuxprinting.org.

I'm sure I didn't get all that

Hope this helps.

You got it all!
Thanks for the response.

Yes it appears I had a 2.7 version that was installed with the Red Hat disks, but I couldn't locate it, so I download the 3.0.0beta3-1 and apparently they don't like each other. I removed the 3.0 and now I'm trying to ignore all that and just get the printer working. Thanks for the 'wealth of information'

I really like the challenge that comes with Linux, but your definitely right I need to take care of one issue at a time.

Thanks as always
I'll be back I'm sure of that!
Got to load Java, install programs for school blah blah blah etc etc
Enjoy
