Instlled Mandrake 9.1. Well somehow I configured it to boot to command interface. How do I get to the GNOME desktop. God I am such a newb!

Login as a user and enter the password,then type startx .That will get you to a desktop.If you want Gnome try typing startx gnome.
If you want to go directly to Gnome when you boot it sounds like you may have to become root and open the /etc/inittab file with a text editor and change the line:
id:3:initdefault:
to
id:5:initdefault:

thanx. I read some old threads last night and figured out what to do.

The only problem now is that I cant connect to the internet. Mandrake recognizes my ethernet card but for some reason I cant connect. I can connect to the DSL router by typing in the IP of the router in the address box. Other than that I cant connect.

I had a similar problem where I am using another Linux box as my router. I could ping/connect the router, but nothing on the Net. For me I found out that it had to do with my network settings. In particular I had to change the hosts file to indicate the other Linux box was on the local network. If you use Harddrake and go to Network, you should be able to plug in your info and get it up and running.
