RH9 eth0 not working
I have been struggling with this problem all day. I have RadHat 9 installed.

When this box was a Mandrake system, the adapter and network worked fine.

I have a D-Link adapter with a static IP address (it didn't assign an address from my DHCP host). The RJ45 patch cable & switch port work fine. My network is working fine.

I have disabled the firewall.

I have the following messages in System Log:
localhost kernel: eth0: D-Link DFE-538TX (RealTek RTL8139) at 0xe0950000,
00:05:5d:47:d4:5e, IRQ 5
localhost kernel: eth0: Setting 100mbps full-duplex based on
auto-negatioated partner ability 45el.

I cannot ping and other PCs on the network.
I cannot access the internet.

My network is 192.168.1.xx, my gateway is 192.168.1.251, the IP of my RedHat box is 192.196.1.95, subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

PEERDNS=no
TYPE=Ethernet
IPADDR=192.168.1.95

GATEWAY=192.168.1.251

My etx/resolver.conf is

search localdomain
nameserver 192.168.1.251

I have assigned the gateway address to namesever because this is the DSN Server address assigned to my working windows machines by my DHCP server (an IPCop firewall acting as DHCP server & router).

I hope someone can help.

What's your network look like?

Do you have a router? If so, are you using dhcp?

The rest omited as nothing important other the "lo".


More telling is that route -n lists extra addresses

169.254.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth0

0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.251 UG 0 0 0 eth0

Don't know where the 169.254.0.0 and 0.0.0.0 came from. Guess I need to get rid of these (any idea how?), they don't show up on the RH networking wizard.

The Route information is normal.

While logged on as root, do an iptables -L

Turns out it was a flakey patch cable between the patch panel and the switch.
