php.ini - not found
I did a default install of PHP in linux mandrake. When I copy the php.ini-dist to the /etc directory MySQL stops working. However, I need to turn off PHP safe mode as it's causing me not to be able to run some software..

I don't follow how you need to turn off php safe mode. PHP does not actuall run. It kinda of combines with apache. MySQL is probably bombing if it is looking for the php installation.

What software is giving you the problem? The best thing to do is to just shut down the MySQL and Apache daemons and see if your software works then.

Safe Mode is off by default, unless you changed the directive, it won't be causing you problems.

Actually, safe mode is on...

Warning: file_exists() [function.file-exists]: SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid is 500 is not allowed to access /var/www/html/shop owned by uid 0 in /var/www/html/shop/includes/header.php on line 15

I didn't change the configuration setting. In order to turn safe mode off, I believe in need to edit the php.ini file. However, their is no php.ini files (there is one, php.ini-dist, but when I use it MySQL stops working).

Open up the "Install Software" program and type in "php-ini". This should come up with "php-ini-4.3.0-1mdk". Check this file to install it. Once loaded you will have the "php.ini" file under /etc.
