Try opening a mixer(like kmix or aumix) and see that the sound isnt muted or turned down.

The idea is that it doesn't detect my sound card. I also have Win XP and everything's OK there.

Try opening a terminal and run sndconfig(as root) first. The AC97 chip is well supported.

Are you root? That'd by first attempt. That and make sure that you have sndconfig installed. it'd be in either /bin,/usr/bin,or/usr/sbin

Yes. I'm root. I see that I don't have sndconfig installed. But I do have the installation CDs. What exactly should I do to install sndconfig. As I said, I know next to nothing about linux. Thanks in advance.

I've run /usr/sbin/sndconfig. It says this:" Intel Corp. |82801EB AC'97 Audio is not supported"

I did a search and it seems that chip is based on ICH5 and ,indeed,is not supported in the 2.4.21 kernel that RH 9 ships (not 9.1 unless you mean Fedora).
There are some spotty workarounds for this but until you get your feet webbed like a penguin ,I would suggest getting a SB 16 pci card which is supported.
Sorry I couldnt be of more help.Let us know what you do.

My computer is in warranty so I can't mess with the hardware. Can't I uninstall this version of Linux and install another version that supports the chip? If it is possible, what options do I have?

No user linux systems would be able to support it, because the support is kernel based. Unless you want to move to 2.6 kernel dev land, i concur with the above. (BTW, installing hardware probably wont void the warranty, but even if it does, you can take it to a dealer, who can install it without voiding waranty)

OK. Thanks for everything. It seems that for now at least I'll have to do without sound. Thanks again for your time, lynch and Whiteskin.
