A friend and I got Linux Lycros (?) installed on an old PC, then he did all the configuring etc. We had connection to my LAN and the Internet. Recently for no known reason wqe lost connection.
The cable is still connected to PC and router, and it looks like the router sees the PC OK.

I cannot see the Linux box from my PC's Network Neoghborhood though.

Any suggestions on where to go next? I am pretty much a newbie to Linux, althougth I do have a basic understanding of commands etc.

Open up a shell prompt and type ifconfig

Can I include an output command that will write it to a text file on a floppy that I can bring to this PC?

I'm having trouble getting to a shell prompt, but I did stumble into "Interfaces" and see that the neither the Ethernet nor the Loopback are enabled. Is that a problem?

I dont run a gui, everything is command line for me. A shell prompt is similar to the command prompt in Windows 2000/XP. Would be nice if you could get to there. You can redirect output to a text file in linux the same way you do at a Windows Command prompt.

command > somefile.txt

ifconfig eth0 up

I'll see what I can do to get to a command line. In the meantime do you think I should try to "Enable" the Ethernet card and "Loopback"?

Ok, I got the ifconfig to run and it showed no errors.
It appears to show NIC operating as well as the Loop-back.

Edit I did try the up command and got permission (or access) denied.

Did it show you all your IP address information. IP addresss, subnet mask, broadcast. etc...

While you have a shell prompt open, try pinging an ip address on your lan and one that is on the internet.

here is yahoo's
ping 66.218.71.198

Then try pinging a domain name.
ping yahoo.com

Assuming that your floppy is mounted......

ifconfig > /mnt/floppy/somefile.txt
