Where Can I Find Red Hat 9
I was wondering where I could get a copy of Red Hat 9 on the internet. I found a couple of red hat based downloads, but I was wondering what the best one was and how to get it...I'm a newbie to Linux. Thanks.

Actually, http://fedora.redhat.com is supposedly RH9 but may have had some development done on it since moving to the Fedora project.

Or, try one of the mainained projects available at linuxiso.org. RH9 is out of development, and as such is becoming outdated. If you really want to try linux try knoppix <http://www.knoppix.org/> or morphix <http://morphix.sourceforge.net/modules/news/> both of which are liveCD iso images (Meaning they run off the cd, without touching your real hard drive.)

Then, if you like that, move on to somthing like the fedora, or debian. Because this is linux remember that you are learning a totally diffrent operating system, things will be diffrent and it is best to learn from the ground up. Get used to the console, then begin to understand the basics of X. Use the liveCDs as somthing to point your own growth towards.

BTW though, Congrats on giving somthing new a try.

look at Ebay if you don't have to the time to download it or try to locate a LUG (linux user group) in you area. they should be able and willing to help.

What don't you like about RH9 ?

I know some of the stuff I learned on 8 seem to be gone on 9

Not trying to dissuade him, but its usually better to learn on a newer systerm, especially since 2.6.1 came out. Since i assume its a desktop one day i bet he will want to go to 2.6.1 and it will be easier on a currently supported distro.

I wont reccomend debian here, not until sarge comes out at least. Try slackware.

The kernel. 2.6.* has a new scheduler that makes desktop applications faster, AKA preemptible kernel.

I hate to look like I am jumping on this thread, but can I update to a new kernel on my Redmond/Lycros Linux?

How old is it? Try just downloading the kernel sources, and checking out the HOWTO.

Have you ever upgraded a kernel before?
