Question networking redhat and mac OS X panther
I am having a severe problem with coms from my linux box to my mac via ethernet. Heres the run down:

-I have linux box connected via external serial modem
-the linux is connected to the mac via ethernet
-I am seeing traffic via ethereal and also through ifconfig on both boxes

problem: mac gets no dns to operate internet...
also the mac doesnt have the same ip designation as the linux.

what I have tried:

-enabled dhcp on both machines

any suggestions?....I am pulling my hair out here!

So from my understanding, your using the linux box as a router/ firewall (as well as a working linux distro) between the internet and the mac box?

If you don't have it acting as a router, then you'll have to activate it as such, afaik. Course lynch probably will have a better way around that.

DHCP will only work for one of the machines because the gateway is to the linux box. the mac box even if it has it enabled either will be seen by the isp, and no doubt blocked (due to the fact they don't like multiple computers on 1 connection but cant look past a router). setting the linux box up as a router, or getting a router is probably the best option i can think of.

Wait for one of the other guys who know a bit more though to confirm deny, bonk me over the head for suggesting something so silly etc.

okie so the mac box ip should be:

192.168.1.100(1) subnet 255.255.255.0 ?
if not then its not trying to go thru the linux router for its dhcp address.

I want to say its a router setup issue, since the mac is on a 168, and not on a 192. It should be on a 192...though I don't know what might of been wrong. What software are you using to be the router program etc?

hmm the only way i know to do it is with a actual something to act as a router. I'm not sure if Samba does that with a mac box..since samba tends to be for windows directories etc.

If you want to set up a actual router on it theres http://www.squid-cache.org/ <---which is a proxy

and you have Zebra Which i've not heard of but appears to do the job, and it does come from ibm.

The mac box has to get its dhcp from the router afaik.
