.iso image changes
If I have an image to burn to CD (in this case SLAX Live-CD), but need to make some changes for system compatibility (a USB mouse vs. the default mouse config), how do I then save the changes back to be able to reburn the image with the correct configuration for the PC in question?

I'm trying to avoid editing the file after booting every time. I'm a relative newbie to Linux, so if this is really obvious - be kind to me! Thanks in advance...

Not sure how SLAX works but Knoppix which is another Live cd allows you to save your configuration to a floppy or hard drive so the next time you boot you dont have to reconfigure everything. Maybe SLAX has something like that or just use Knoppix.

Well, I'm obviously being unclear. I'm asking how to reburn the full image AFTER changes have been made... the 'configsave' / 'configrestore' were obvious to begin with.

Any idea how to then update the .iso image where Live-CD originally came from?

Ideally, this is my goal: I have two machines, a desktop and a laptop, which have widely differing hardware config needs, and I'd like to create a Live-CD fully bootable version customized for each environment that I can keep handy to boot and work with. The default Live-CD version doesn't work exactly right with either of the systems. I can make the appropriate changes, but according to the SLAX FAQ's all of the changes to /etc/* don't even necessarily get saved with 'configsave' to begin with. Plus, that still doesn't give me a bootable version customized for the PC in question.

I'm still learning Linux, but am a Windows software developer of 20+ years, so not really stupid, just woefully ignorant.

Can you point me to resources describing how to take this customized version (in memory), and create a complementary .iso image to be reburned (reflecting all the changes)?

Thanks for the help so far!

I know you can do this with Knoppix. They have instructions on there website on how to create your own customized knoppix CD.

And if you read the Documentation under development. It gives you a brief idea on how to make your own

You might get better help for this topic if you posted on the Slax forums.

LwdSquashman:

Thanks for the continued help. I'll try posting this on the SLAX site since it's so specific to that distro.

I was hoping that you could simply "merge" the updated file info back into an .ISO someway (obviously showing my ignorance here), but after further investigation I don't think it's going to be that simple.

Once again, thanks.

The instructions for making your own Live Cd look rather simple. Why not try the insturctions before you post over there.
