cant telnet into cobalt cube
Hi all,

I cant telnet into my cobalt cube (running Linux) from a remote windows computer using kermit or hyperterminal. I've done this a thousand times before and it worked. I hate to say this but nothing changed (lol) on the host, and the last time I tried to telnet in, I couldn't.

When I attempt to telnet in, I get the welcome string, but I"m never presented with a username/password prompt. After a while, the client looses the connection due to a timeout.

Normally, after the connection is made, I would see:
Cobalt Cube

Username:
Password:

After entering the correct username/passwork, the telent session was estliblished.

Now, when I telent in, all I get is:
Cobalt Cube

Pressing the enter key doesnt' do anything.

The daemon must be running bc I can telent in if I connect to the serial port on the host and use hyperterminal. I just cant connect remotely.

I'm attempting to telnet in via tcp/ip. the client computer is a member of the correct workgroup.

any ideas???
Thanks in advance
Steve

Have you rebooted? Also, try restarting sshd.

It sounds like you need to change the firewall rules. I think telnet is like ftp where once it established a connection it jumps to a port above 1024 (or something high like that) to use for the rest of the session. If your firewall does not allow related traffic then you will get that sort of lock out.

The connection will start, but before you get to the password prompt you lose the connection. Check your firewall rules on the cube. Perhaps you accidentally flushed them to a basic state or something?

What does that have to do with telnet? How about he tries restarting the telnet daemon.

I have rebooted several times, with the same results. As I stated eariler, the daemon must be running since I can sucessfully telnet in when connected directly to the cubes serial port using Hyperterminal....at least I think that indicates it must be running.....right?

OK, I will also check the firewall settings, but I'm pretty sure I dont even have it enabled...the cube isn't connected to the internet.
