Absolute newbie on Linux networking with XP
Must say I have just tried to load a couple of versions of Linux on a PC and am very surprised by its functionality, as a first timer last week.

Previously I have bought 6 licenses of XP and run 4 pc on wireless network to use a broadband at home, the other 2 copies with son and daughter live away from home. The XP works OK and I can get Linux up to talk to the wireless router and enjoy the Internet connection too.

But I wonder if the Linux and Xp can communicate via the same network and share the resources etc, like the printer and the hard disk.

Would appreciate any feed back. I know that I may be asking a lot, especially with only a week experience on Linux. Just want to know if a possibility exists.

You most definitely can share your Windoze and Linux resources, whether that means giving your Windoze workstations access to your Linux resources (you will need samba on Linux for this) or your Linux workstations access to your Windoze resources (you can do this out-of-the-box on Linux, without any special software required). Bottom line: yes!

Hope this helps.

codejockey,

Thanks for the confirmation. It will be sometime before I start to bottom it out but it is nice to know that it isn't a deadend.

tsunam,

It is a CR054g manufactured by INEXQ. A cheapie I think but a perfect "plug and play" 11g device and is supposed to be compatiable with 802.11b system (11Mbps). The router is also a 11g system(54Mbps).

samba
I used redhat version 7 to set up samba. was a simple edit to a text file to add the name of the xp computer. was not so difficult. by now there should be gui tools to set up samba but i have not used it for a while. was not hard to set up and worked great.
