I have used linux at home for a short time but I dont know how to install any binary file that I may get from the web. (such as java or file sharing software) I am using mandrake and red hat. not sure how to use the rpm's either.

Binaries are installed diffrent ways depending on the binary
Shell scripts most likely would go in ~/bin... unless they are for system wide use. (/usr/local/bin/)

RPM is hard to explain quickly and consisely. Try man rpm.
