CD-ROM Drivers Mandrake 10
I am attempting a new install on an older Toshiba 220CDS laptop and I can get the installation to begin and boot from the CD but it will say there is no CD-ROM installed and ask for a driver. How can I source a driver for Linux. I am pretty sure it is a plain jane ATAPI IDE CD-ROM.

I try and use the Kernal drivers and then it asks for parameters to give the Kernel. Not sure what to enter.

If you are using grub as your bootmanager, have a look at the docs for passing parameters to the kernel at bootime. LILO will allow this as well. At least have a look at:man grub, man lilo, /usr/share/doc/packages/grub ...../lilo. It sounds like you simply need to tell your machine where the drive is located the first time you boot from it. Is you bios set to boot the drive as well? Good luck..peter

It boots to the install CD just fine but the OS cannot access it after that point. I have no idea what parameters to pass to the Kernel or what boot manager is runnung as I have not even partitioned the drives nor loaded a boot manager.

What does this mean? What flavor of linux are you trying to install? Tell me what screen you are getting to when the machine hangs or stops./peter

Hmmmm...the title of the thread states Mandrake 10 is the OS attemting to be installed. During the device initialization there is an error message "No CDROM device found" and that's that. This is at a DOS like screen with a blue bottom border on the screen where you can view the install log ot view the kernel messages. Once you respond to the OK prompt it asks for an additional drivers floppy.

Go here and check out the section on Red Hat 8. The author mentions a work-around.

I think the workaround they are referring to is setting up the Xircom card and dual booting a Windows OS with Linux. I wonder if RH would install any easier...it runs like a turd on every other PC I have installed it on so it prolly wouldn't run at all on this laptop.
