I have a rh9 box at the house with my ftp and webpage runnning on it.
But I want to create another ftp account and I am not at the house. I can use putty to get ito the box and have already created the folder in the home dir where my account is.
1 how do i set a password for the new account
2 how do i set priviliges... i know that there is a command and 777 that is wide open but i cant remember the command

can someone point me in the right direction?

chmod is the command, and passwd is the password command.

You did not need to create the home directory. It will be created when you create the user.

I would also dump FTP and use SSH for everything.

You send files through ssh using scp. The format is 'scp user@original.address:/path/to/file user@destination.address:/path/to/file'

You can use scp between two machines you are not even local to. However, when scp'ing from or to the local machine you are on you can leave out the user@address portion of the command.

If you will be transferring files between windows and nix you can pick up pscp for windows at the same site putty is hosted from.
