Hi!

I use RedHat 7 on an Pentium III 533 Mhz with 128 Megs Ram.
I was so stupid to install the Xfree86 X4.0.1-Server right over my original X3.3.6-Server!!! DAMN! X401 is just an upgrade I just read in the readme (too late!)! Now nothing works! X won't start (just a black screen, and I have to make a hard reset), and when I boot into text mode and try to configure the X Server with XF86config or xf86configurator (or something like that), it tells me "Segmentation fault, core dumped", and crashes!
Well, so I just tried to install X4, but this won't work either! I tried it with ALL available versions (glibc20, glibc21 and libc5), without effort. The installation script always says "need newer ld.so" !! HUH??? Whats this?
I have glibc22 (afaik), but glibc21 servers should work fine with this one, don't they?!
Ok, now what shall I do now (except reinstall!)???

Thanks!

Phil

AFAIK, Redhat is totally rpm based, unless you grabbed the binaries from the XF86 ftp site, you probably installed from RPM, right?

I'd say the best thing to do would be to get the complete install binaries, including the install.sh script that will tell you what version you want, from ftp.xfree86.org, then remove the rpms you have installed for X.

It may not be the easiest, but it'll probably be the cleanest way to go.

No, my original X 3.3.6 which came with RedHat, is RPM based, but the ones I installed were binaries (.tgz)! How can I remove every piece of X from my system, so that I can make a complete X-reinstallation??
I now have some X rpms and som X binaries in my system... ohoh...
