Ok, this really is just a request for a way to change one setting, but I'll explain the wole problem (just in case it matters ).

Recently, I installed Red Hat Linux 7, and have just managed to get everything working with it, minus the modem (I'm posting this using Win32, which is on my second HDD). The modem was made by Viking Components ( http://www.vikingcomponents.com ), is 56K, V.90, on the ISA bus, and is not a Winmodem (thank god ).

However, Linux won't detect it on anything from /dev/ttyS0 to /dev/ttyS3. With some small detective work, I found out that it is hooked to COM5 in Win32, which I thought was odd. I tried setting /dev/modem to /dev/ttyS4 in Linux, but that didn't seem to work either. I turned off PnP OS in my BIOS, and it didn't help anything in Linux (as far as I could tell), and made it so Windows couldn't access the modem, but it was still on COM5.

Now, my question is: How do I make the modem assign itself to COM2 or /dev/ttyS1? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

(oh, and on a side note, I'd like to know if there's a way to get at some files on my Windows HDD, so I can copy them to my Linux drive
any help there's appreciated too.)

Okay, sounds like you have an old modem, like mine. First, I'd take a peek at the modem. Most older, ISA, hardware based modems have jumpers that let you select the com port for the modem. If you see 'em, pick a port, any port =D

As far as seeing windows partitions, that's cake. You ahve a few options, too. 1... I think linuxconf has some sort of partition manager in it, and you should be able to detect your windows drives and view them.

Option 2... use the mount command. Type "man mount" in a terminal to see all the syntax you need, but it's going to be something in the way of <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">code:</font><HR><pre>mount -t vfat /dev/hda4 /mnt/win-c
get it? It's COMMAND -switch /location/of/partition /location/of/mount/point

Get it? If you're still confused on the /dev/hdx stuff, let me know. I can go into detail. I'm not sure if mount's man page has any info on it.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no jumpers on the modem itself. I looked for them already, and in retrospect should've mentioned that. Any other ideas?

Oh, and thanks for the help with the hard drive, I'll try that on my next reboot.
