I am an extremely advance Windows user and just recently moved into a new part of my city that has Cable Modem access. I want to have a firewall on my connection. I know that I can use Windows NT with some firewall program, but I want to move to the LINUX OS. I have Red Hat 6. Can anyone give me some tips on how to setup a firewall on LINUX? My LINUX knowledge is very slim. I have installed it and looked around and thats about it. The LINUX machine will be attached to the cable modem and the LINUX machine will be attached through a HUB and then to the Windows machine and the Windows machine will be connecting through the internet via the linux machine. I probably babbled so pick out what you can. THX for the help.

Okay. What you're looking for here is IPCHAINS and IPMASQING. There are HOW-TO's on www.linuxdocs.org, or there are also NHF's (Newbieized Help Files) on www.linuxnewbie.org. You will find that learning the power of Linux without spending time on the manpages and other LDP Documentation is very very difficult, but with a good book, becomes -much- easier. I recommend O'Reilly's 'Running Linux'. Check it out. Otherwise, good luck and don't give up on the Penguin, cuz the Penguin won't give up on you!

Uh...

Yeah, what Rhayne said!

Naw, I'd have to say, the best way to set up a linux firewall is to READ READ READ. Learn ipchains, ip masquerading, and stuff like that. I believe there's a firewall NHF @ Linuxnewbie.org but I haven't checked in awhile. I'm also a regular over at LNO, it's a great site and you'll definitely get serious linux help there.

Theres another good book that explains linux firewalling (and many other topics) very well. Try "Linux Network Administrators Guide" chapter 9 is on firewalling. Theres an online version here: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/linag2/book/index.html
