Suggested distro for old pc
I know this is a rather vague question but I was wondering if someone might have a suggestion for me.
I have an old Packard Bell, 200MHz, 96MB ram, 8GB HD. I would like to load some Linix distro on it for playing but not sure what this system can handle. I have RH7.3 already but afraid even that might be to much. I do plan to use cli a lot but would like it if it could at least function semi-well with a gui desktop (will be hooking up to kvm).
Functionality wise, I will be using it mostly for learning and playing around online. I have dabbled in Linux a few time but never to the point of actually installing apps and such though it doesn't scare me (I administer several AIX 4.3.3 and 5.1 boxes [cli only] - I know very different but definitely not like Windows!).

RH 7.3 will run, but x might be a bit slow. Anything that old is a good candidate for slack, debian, or Suse. I am partial to slack, and if it was me, I would probably run slack 4. If no X, I would run slack 10.

Thanks for the suggestion! Do you know of anywhere I could find ISO(s) for Slackware 4? This is where my ignorance shines - if no ISO(s) - how do I get and install?

Have a look here:

http://www.slackware.com/getslack/

You will have to go to one of the mirrors (FTP) and download the ISO's that way. Slack comes in 4 disk sets. You only need the 1st ISO.

That's where I was looking but can't seem to find any ISOs for 4.

You're right, it looks like everyone has pulled the older versions. I had version 4 on a CD, but I threw it away thinking to myself "ahhh I can just download it"

Anyways, version 10.1 should still work with a minimal X configuration(no KDE, or GNOME). Heck, if I can run AIX 5.1L on a IBM c10 80Mhz PPC, surely slack10 can run on a p200

Any distro will run that.

My computer is only 66mhz faster, with only 64 of ram, and I run enlightenment on top of ubuntu fine. The biggest mistake people make is trying to use kde/gnome on a small PC. Try XFCE4.
