Knoppix
If I want to run a knoppix live cd on my PC, does there need to be some type of operating system on the hard drive or will it boot and run from the rom drive with a hard drive that is empty ?

I can't say for sure. I took the easy way out and bought a ready made disk off ebay for 5 bucks

Nah, you shouldn't. I just burned the .iso straight to CD-R. BTW, what burner are yer gonna use? If Nero, I wouldn't reccommend it. Thats what I done and wasted a disc. I recommend using ISO Burner (sorry, I dont have a link ) It is designed to burn .iso's, and so does it perfectly...use that to burn just the .iso image onto the disc. No help files or anything...

Hope that helps

nero is fine as long as you don't select, make this disc bootable. the iso that you will burn (it will open to a lot of files) is bootable by itself

the md5 and sha1 are checksums

what you would do is run a program to find the md5 or sha1 value of the file you downloaded, and compare it to the values that are provided with the iso

this way you can make sure there weren't any erors downloading or burning the file, or that the image hasn't been tampered with by a third party

Thanks for the feedback I use burn4free and I have found it to be very good, it has a burn iso feature on it so I will try that.

some burn programs show an md5 at the end, i'm not sure about burn4free.

there's a bunch of md5 programs for windows
go to download.com and search for md5. look for programs that find "message digests"
