server: linux or microsoft?
i've heard some different rumors about what's the best between a server in linux and microsoft.
My question is: does linux manage mysql and php as fine as microsoft?
I'd like to create a vbulletin based forum in my website, is it fine to do it in a linux server?

thanks!

Linux probably supports them better, but there is more of a learning curve as far as getting it set up correctly on Linux. It is more the web server you need to be concerned with than the OS. Most people that are on Linux servers use Apache web server.

Yea, Apache Server is the way to go I'd say. Never actually used Microsoft Server, but Apache works fantastically.

Definitely go with Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP (called the LAMP platform.)
Once you get it setup and read a little a bit about using a firewall, you won't need to worry about daily exploits, buffer overflows, and viruses.

Even if you're using Windows Apache would be the way to go. But in either OS environments Apache Friends has provided a quick and easy distribution of Apache, MySQL, and Perl/PHP. You can check it out here http://www.apachefriends.org/en/

actually the point is this: can a server linux support asp.net as well?
So, altogether: mysql, php, asp.net?

thanks

Yes, in fact there is a Mono plugin for Apache that allows for ASP.NET: http://www.go-mono.com/asp-net.html

Its better to use Mono (http://www.mono-project.com/Main_Page) then try asp.net on Linux. asp.net on Linux is not impossible, but not something great. But why not PHP?

Yeah...if you're using vBulletin I don't see any need for ASP.net
