Troubles with D: drive!
I get the following output from fdisk and cfdisk on my computer.

--start of partition tables--

Output of fdisk under Mepis(most like what I think I have except starting
with cylinder 2):

Disk /dev/hdb: 13.6 GB, 13601193984 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1653 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdb1 2 1653 13269690 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hdb5 2 420 3365586 b W95 FAT32
/dev/hdb6 421 900 3855568+ 83 Linux
/dev/hdb7 901 950 401593+ 82 Linux swap
/dev/hdb8 951 1399 3606561 83 Linux
/dev/hdb9 1400 1653 2040223+ 83 Linux

Output of cfdisk under Mepis:

Disk Drive: /dev/hdb
Size: 13601193984 bytes, 13.6 GB
Heads: 255 Sectors per Track: 63 Cylinders: 1653

Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pri/Log Free Space 8.23
hdb5 Logical W95 FAT32 3446.40
hdb6 Logical Linux ext3 3948.14
hdb7 Logical Linux swap 411.27
hdb8 Logical Linux ext3 3693.16
hdb9 Logical Linux ext3 2089.23

Under Windows:

Display Partition Information

Current fixed disk drive: 2

Partition Status Type Volume Label Mbytes System Usage
1 EXT DOS 12959 100%

Total disk space is 12967 Mbytes (1 Mbyte = 1048576 bytes)

--end of partition tables--

My list of drives in Windows shows:

Master(C:)
(D:)
Drv3_vol1(E:)

When I try to access drive D: from 'My Computer' in Windows I get:

Disk D is not available
A device attached to the system is not working.

My questions are:

Why can't I access drive D: from Windows?
Why doesn't cylinder one(1) show up in one of the outputs?
Can the situation be fixed or must I do a complete reformat?

Thanks.

Windows doesn't support Linux filesystems.
You could try explore2fs or ext2fsd
