Is there a linux distro that will in essance turn a computer into a mp3 player with out a monitor and have info on a small few inch lcd screen that plays mp3 and wmas upon inserting a cd into the drive

Yes and no. It is possible to do, but not without effort on your part. Its not going to be a plug in and go type of situation. With a few scripts you can easilly make it do exactly what you want it to do.

if you know programming and are familar with linux, not very hard..just perhaps a bit time consuming. If not..well a good time to learn

i have played with mandrake and red hat couldnt figure out how to get data off of ntfs and fat 32 harddisks so i left it alone. and accidently reformating it.just bought another mp3 cd player these dont last long. was wanting to experiment to see if i could build my own from spare pc parts i have laying around. if the latest mp3 cd player dies too quick.

is there a walk through you know of

They started plenty of these projects back about 6 years ago. I believe one of the first ones was the Route66 project. It was in one of the first issues of Maximum Linux magazine which is now defunct.
