Sound not working in Linux
Hi, i have recently bought components for a custom pc i am building and have installed it all fine with Mandrake Linux 10.1

The motherboard is an ASRock p4vm800 with onboard sound and graphics(see link)

http://www.asrock.com/product/product_p4vm800.htm

the problem i am having is that no sound can be heard(the mp3's etc play silently)? is there any known compatibility issues or special linux drivers available to solve this? (i cant use the mobos disk as it contains .exe's)

you help and ideas are very much appreciated !!

(also, sometimes when trying to load data discs or even just load up the home directory, it says loading, then after a minute or two it resumes to its idle state without accomplishing anything!!) any ideas?

Thanks again!

Peter

Start with the simple stuff:Open a mixer (kmix) and check for mute button being on or volume levels turned down.

Have you tried going to Mandrake Control Center> Hardware> Hardware and clicked on the Audio> category to see if it lists your sound card? There should be an option to run the config tool.

Well, the 3rd thing I'd try is opening KDE Control Center> Sound> Sound system and see if the "Enable the Sound System" box is checked.

I had a simular problem with mine, it was installed and appeared to be working other than no sound from my speakers. I went down the list and tried every driver until I found one that worked. It wasn't even the driver that was recommended but it did work!

I couldn't find the info I wanted on mandrake, but I'm sure that it uses ALSA for it's sound, open up a term window (su to root if you need to) and run 'alsaconfig' or 'alsaconf', alsa is good at detecting sound card and compatable modules. then run 'alsamixer' set everything where you want it, then run 'alsactl store' that'll save the settings.

if you don't have ALSA try to get it. I've had issues with it before, that's usually with very old sound cards. Other then that search google's linux for modules that may work.

just be careful, if you use the wrong module and the sound card doesn't like it you may fry it (I've never seen that myself tho). Usually if the module won't work you will be told and it won't run.

if you find a module that may work, use 'modprobe' or 'insmod' that should help. Good Luck!
