Right, im gettin bored with windows98, im lookin for a change.
i want to install linux mandrake.
and i have some questions....

Ok i have win98, amd 500mhz, 64Mb RAM and a 10.2Gig hd with 6.5G free.
i think my HD should be enough.
i know this may be simple but, what should i partition my HD into to install mandrake and keep win98?

I dont think i do but i will ask anyway to make sure, do i have to reformat before i partition?

ok, this has probably been answered before, but... Can mandrake be installed from the Hard drive? if so can someone explain how.

Thanks in advance.

i just installed drake7.2 and it's easy, it will give you an option to create and format the partitions you need, an ext2 and a swap partition, you will need both, 6gb should be enough space, take your time follow instructions and you should be ok, drake is pretty cool,oh yes, if you choose to keep 98 when you install lilo to the mbr, you should get a menu listing windows or linux to boot from, as for installing from hdrive ,if you downloaded a iso file it'll need to be burned to cd then installed, maybe someone will correct me if i'm wrong

I've always had good luck just installing LILO to the superblock of the root linux partition. It keeps things from getting too hairy, IMO.

thanks for your help everyone.
one more question...
i have read that winmodems cannot be used on linux, is there any way i can see if my modem is a winmodem before i start to install mandrake?
my modem is a Rockwell HCF 56k data fax PCI modem, hope that helps.

If the modem is an HCF, it's definitely a winmodem. However, you may be able to find a driver for it at linmodems.org.

[edit]
By the way, you should definitely go with Mandrake 8.0 if you're thinking of testing the linux waters. It's the easiest distro to start using, and it has GREAT hardware support. (Not to mention, it's awful purdy)

Dear Mike V:

I'm using Mandrake 7.2 with pppd 2.4.0.
Compuserve is my ISP

My problem revolves around the fact that Compuserve needs a custom dialup script to get connected. From their Linux forum, they have given me the following script ----

Send /r
Expect ame:
Send CIS
Expect ID:
Send 123456,7890/NOINT/GO:PPPCONTECT
Expect ord:
Password Enter Password

My problem is that the machine hangs on the Expect ame: command. If I remove the Expect commands, I can get into the CIS network, but I get an error message stating that
the connection is "not 8 bit clean". This has been explained to me as due to the fact that the CIS sends the text in 7E1 and my script expects 8N1. They then suggested that I modify the Expect commands to just Expect :

Still no luck.

Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong or an alternate ISP that is a little easier to connect to than CIS.?
