I am a newbie to Linux so go easy on me guys and gals

I am running a PII 333 with 2 hard drives, one is 8 gig and the other is a brand new 30 gig with just some songs on it. I have ordered SuSE Linux 7.1 PRO and was wondering what if anything I need to do to the new 30 gig prior to installing SuSE? Will I need to re-format this drive to be able to run a dual boot system?? If so, what is the recommended size of any partitions I need to install when re-formatting? Will I be able to dual boot if Linux is on one drive and windows on the other drive?? Anybody else used SuSE 7.1 PRO?? How hard is it to install?? Anything I need to be made aware of prior to install?? So many questions....sorry

Gladi8r

......can anybody help me with this?????????

Hi Gladi8r,

Suse Linux is quite straightforward in its installation routine. When you are asked for the partition to put linux on, you can just select the harddrive you wish to use, it will automatically partition it.
You can also partition manually, then you need at to specify at least one partition with mount point / and a swap partition.

If you have more questions, feel free..

cheers
Bart

Does SuSE linux also have bootmagic or something like it to allow me to select which operating system to use? Do I have to remove what I now have on my 2nd(30gig) HD in order for SuSE to pattition it?

Suse uses Lilo (linux loader).
At installation it asks you wether you want to install lilo on a floppy disk, so when you boot from the floppy, you have a choice between different operating systems, when you boot without floppy it goes directly to your windows installation.
It may be a good idea to create empty space (unassigned hard drive space) on your 30GB harddrive, you can do this with a program like partition magic.

Cheers
Bart

My intentions are to install Linux on the 30 gig and windows is already installed on the 8 gig. Will this be a problem?? Do I have to install Linux on the same drive as the windows OS? Where do I get partition magic? I have never seen it in a store anywhere. Also, is there any way to load to linux without using a floppy? I have heard about a program called boot magic or something like that, that would allow ya to boot to either OS, does this also require you to boot from a floppy? Sorry for all the questions.

If there is no data yet on the 30 GIG drive, you can just use the partitioning program that comes with SuSe. YOu will automatically pass by that screen when you are installing linux.
If you have data on that new drive, consider moving it to the older one, or if you want to partition your drive use the included package with linux (fips or something) very carefully or get partition magic (www.powerquest.com)

If you let Linux reformat the drive, partitions will be sized correctly automatically, if not you can find more info in the manual (small boot, large /usr, etc...)
