ok im no linux expert.
far from it infact!!
i installed linux mandrake a while ago and then found that i could not get online as i had a winmodem! from what i have found out, it is a modem that uses software to replace some of the hardware components usually found on a modem. the software it uses is only available for windows. some have had drivers written for linux, but they can be unreliable!! unfortunately have a winmodem that i can not use on linux at all!!!!

my advise is to go here http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/20010302a.html to see if you have a winmodem it shows normal modems as OK, winmodems as WM and linmodems (winmodems that have had a driver created for them so they can be used on linux) as LM. and go here http://www.linmodems.org to see if you can do anything about it if you do have one.

hope this helps!

if you dont have a winmodem then im sorry because i cant help you, thats about as far as my linux knowlage goes.

I have this problem too. Stuck with my AopenFM56-PM modem, which won't work at this point on this computer. On my old P133 where I also installed Red Hat 7, there was no problem whatsoever with my old USR 28.8 external modem. I can't remember exactly how it went, but it was pretty simple. Just have to look through the the utilities in the side menu. All you need is the phone number and server DNS numbers, it will go through, detect your modem and your laughing (or crying if you have a Windmodem )

http://www.linmodems.org

Most winmodems don't work in Linux, although there are significant leaps in drivers becoming available for them. However, if a winmodem is not your problem, then more information is needed. What Window Manager are you using? KDE? Gnome? What program are you trying to use to connect? kPPP? wvdial? Do you have the proper information (DNS servers, DHCP status, Dial-up number, et al)? Let us know where you're bogging down, and we'll see what we can do for ya! Long live the Penguin.

As for Desktop size, if you are using KDE there should be a Control Preferences App in the K button. I'm not sure about Gnome, but I think there is one there also. Or, you may have SaX, or, if all else fails, take a look at xfree86config. Good luck!

Have you pulled the case off and physically looked at the chips on the modem? Oftentimes the chipset may be printed on them. Otherwise, call your computer's manufacturer. They should be able to determine the products used to build your PC from the serial number. I am assuming that this isn't self-built. Either way, if you find that what you have is a winmodem with no drivers available, allow me to suggest a modem to you based off of personal experience. The Zoom 56k External modem. It is high quality, has a very competitive price, is fully Linux and Winders compatible, and the fact that it is external allows better monitoring of data transmissions anyway. Let me know if this helps you or not.

But on another chip, i saw:
Atech

what should i do?

Alright. It's a Lucent winmodem, then, and many (though not all) of those are supported. That's a step in the right direction. I'm not sure which of those numbers will be the one you're looking for (although I'd try the 1646 first). Skate out to Lucent's website and see if you can search/match any of those numbers. If so, then skate to http://www.linmodems.org and see the status of it, or, if you're lucky, there may be drivers on Lucent's site already (although I wouldn't hold my breath ). If Lucent can't match any of the numbers, then follow my previous suggestion of calling the PC's manufacturer with the serial number for a composite list of parts. Good luck!

I don't know, I can't ever say I have been 'fine and dandy'. Sometimes fine, sometimes dandy. Bah. Anyway.

If you can't find it at http://www.lucent.org (which I will assume you've tried), then skate out to the greatest search engine in all of the known world and search for it. That's right, go to http://www.google.com and enter the search keyword of 'Lucent Technologies'. That will give you the addie of Lucent Inc. From there, progress as you've been instructed. Peace, and good luck!
