Greetings.

I'm embarking on an adventure to migrate from a Windows-based DirecPC server to a Linux-based DirecPC server and am looking for advice as to which Linux distro would be best for my purposes.

- MUST be kernel 2.4.x. The DirecPC drivers have serious issues with 2.6.
- support for dhcp, samba, firestarter, etc.
- VNC support

Any suggestions or advice are greatly appreciated.

I've been running a 2.4 kernel Slackware for 6 months now.

I've got Samba set up on my Mandrake box, and I'm thinking about switching over to Slackware as my file server.

Only objection I have to Slackware is that it's so un-friendly to new users. It's not that I don't have the desire to learn so much as I don't have the time. I would definately have an interest in migrating eventually, but now is a bad time.

Is there a way to, with distros like Ubuntu, Mandriva, or SuSE, to downgrade the kernel to 2.4.x? If so, how complicated would the process be? That'd be ideal for me, I'm still pretty dependent on a GUI

Shouldn't be too hard to downgrade the kernel. It might however require recompiling/remerging your rpms for the new kernel version afterwords so they start with it. if you do a rpm search via apt-get or any of the other pm's they three of them use for kernel. You'll get quite a list.

You will also have to configure the kernel for your hardware and that's a bit more difficult (unless the ubuntu and like autoconfiged create a .config file then it might be easier)

I'd suggest the current Debian Sarge release. Ubuntu is a pretty new and always evolving operating system and might not be best for a server. Debian Sarge uses a 2.4 kernel and comes with a basic graphical installer and you can install a Gnome or KDE desktop if you'd prefer that. And best of all, Ubuntu is based on Debian, so if you're used to using apt-get, that's also available on Debian.
