linux over windows
i was thinking about swapping over to linux from windows, but i dont really know what im looking for. some help would be great

i looked on ebay for linux cd's, and found this:
-
Xandros Desktop 3 OS Edition (1 Cd)
For x86 (most modern pc's)

If you are thinking of taking your first tentative steps into the world of Linux then this is the distro for you. Ideally suited for users moving over from windows.

The Xandros GUI uses a modified version of the K Desktop Environment (KDE), which includes replacing Konqueror with its own proprietary file manager called XFM. It also uses a package manager known as Xandros Networks, which handles installation of software. Installation of Xandros is done by a wizard that asks questions about partitioning and the administrator (root) password.

The KDE interface has been modified to resemble Microsoft Windows, with a rectangular "launch" button similar to the Windows Start button, modified context menus, and a file manager with a Windowsesque appearance.

if anyone could tell me if thats good or not, or give me pointers on what i should be looking for. id be greatful

thanks

wonderful

Xandros is a fairly decent starter distro, but no need to EBAY it.

Get the Open Circulation Edition here.

Wonderful,

First -- Try Linux AND Windows !!!

Assuming you already have Windows on your computer, and "some" free space on the hard drive.

Load the Xandros CD and as you go through the installation select -

"Use available space" when you come to partitioning.

This will install Xandros and Windows as a "dual-boot" setup, and you will have a choice of operating systems. You can even select which is the "default" and loads automatically.

prunejuice, thanks for the reply. you said no need to ebay it,i would download it - but the computer im going to be installing it on isnt connected to the internet. and i have no way of transfering the file from this computer to the one without the internet, thanks though.

old bob, thanks for the reply. i think for me (and my other computer) totally wiping windows of the screen would be the best thing to do, it only has 8GB to start with, and with music and programs theres only around 1.5GB of free space. (would that be enough?)

thanks both of you, great help

peace

(just bought it!)

You burn the distribution to a CD, and then install it. I presume the machine had a CD Drive, right?

You can download Ubuntu from any other computer, burn the ISO image to a CD, and then load the disk on the computer that doesn't have internet.

If you don't have a CD burner, perhaps a friend can help you out for a few hours.

running two operating systems on one computer
Hey guys, I hope you don't mind me butting in here but I've been interested in linux and I had heard somewhere that a person could run two op's on one computer. This being my first computer and with all the different distributions of linux, I've been hesitant. I have three coming up that I want to know that there is a world besides billy boy's.

I have no experience in anything other than XP (and very little in that) sooo would this Xandro
be good linux to cut my teeth on ?

Read the previous message. If you have anything that can burn the CD, you can download it, burn it, and install it.

neos1,

Sure, you can have several operating systems, both Windows & Linux, on a single hard drive - IF it's big enough !!!

NOTE: I believe there is one guy here that has about 78 different !! Linux distros on several hard drives.

If you have ONLY ONE computer/hard drive with XP on it -- you need to have a "backup" plan if "the worst happens" and you need to reinstall XP. Do you have XP disks ???

You can do various "dual-boot" setups - Windows & Linux or two different distros of Linux.

Xandos is a good Linux distro to start on, it is very "Windows-like". If you have a "few gigs" of space on your XP hard drive JUST BE SURE to use "Available Space" option when you install, it's possible to use "entire drive" and wipe out Windows XP !!!

Another possibilty is a "live CD" - [ex. Knoppix or Ubuntu] this will temporarily "install Linux" without actually writing anything on your hard drive. You can "try" Linux and see if you like it !!

Just read about IP Cop and how a guy can use an old (or cheap) computer to build a router.
I sent Xandros their form email about the OS aimed at students (have three in school) but they have yet to get back.

I have plenty of HD and XP discs to reinstall if worse came to worse but will I need something
to help me partitiion the harddrive like partition magic or do the new distros do all the "tech stuff" for you?

FYI, Ubuntu will send you as many cd's you want at no charge, they sent me 7, it consist of a full install cd and a live cd. They even paid for shipping. It took about 4 weeks to arrive.
