Question Solved: NetServer LH3R and Linux...what's a good RAID config?
I've successfully setup my NetServer LH3R with
Windows2000 but am now looking towards installing Suse 9.1 instead since
Suse 9.1 has so many more possibilities built into it. The server specs are
(in case these are needed): 2xPentium III 500MHz, 1GB RAM, 6x9GB HDs
(currently configured as 2 HDs for a RAID1 making a drive of 9GB, and the
rest as RAID5 for 27GB) and 2x10/100 *Intel(r) PRO/100+ Management Adapter*,
the RAID controller is a embedded HP NetRAID controller. First question
is...anyone have any idea if the hardware will work OK with Suse 9.1? Second
question is, I'd like all the drives to appear as one 54GB HD, what RAID
setup should I use to accomplish this? Thanks!

Well, the only RAID level that will make them all appear as a single drive is probably RAID-0, but I don't think you want to go that way. RAID-5 gives you the best combination of speed and reliability, but I don't know if you can use all seven drives in a single RAID-5 array.

I question if the controller supports 7 drives in the RAID-5 configuration...

Well I sorta just assumed that the embedded raid controller would not be supported and figured in that case a software raid would be the way to go ^.^;;

And thanks guys for your replies ...I actually only have 6 9GB HDs...so does that change anything? With just 6 HDs does that make it possible to make them all appear as one under RAID 5?

If you install all 6 drives in a RAID5 config, you will only get 45gigs of usable space, as the 6th drive will be the parity drive (although the RAID5 will stripe it out over the entire 6 drives.)

Thanks for your replies guys , I went with the RAID0 since the server will hold no critical data..at least not yet (at which point I suppose I'll change the RAID to a safer and more redundent RAID such as RAID5 as has been suggested here) and am enjoying the full 54GB of all the drives put together as one
