Partitioning Help
I'm trying to create a dual-boot on my eMachines T6524. It has a 200GB hard drive in 2 partitinos. 182GB or so main partition in NTFS and a 5GB or so as a backup in FAT. I'm in Ubuntu Live right now and I'm liking it.

I tried to install the OS, but I ended up with some errors in the partitioning. I tried to reduce the 182GB partition to 40GB. I then created an extended partition with a 100GB(/home and shared) ext3 logical, 40GB (ubuntu)logical, and a 2GB swap. I received an error trying to resize the 182GB partition. How should I go about this? I was forced to use the extended partition because I would have had more than 4.

I even tried expanding the ntfs partition to 100gb. It still doesn't work. There is only 30.2gb of data on the drive and it is defragged to the front.

it still wouldn't resize even when I only tried to resize the 1 partition

I was using gparted and received the error. Actually, I followed someone elses advice in a different forum. The first steps of the partitioning worked, but it failed afterwards. I lost my entire harddrive. I'm reinstalling the OS now.

Hi there.

One thing that I would recommend is this: After you install XP, copy these files to a floppy disk:

boot.ini
ntldr
ntdetect.com

This has saved me in many a situation because the floppy is usually able to boot Windows XP in the event that something goes wrong during a Linux installation.

It doesn't matter anymore. My hard drive was wiped clean. I reinstalled XP and Ubuntu is going right now(I'm on my brothers laptop). I'm just mad because I was too lazy to back up some files and I lost some of my clients' websites.
