grub
is there a way to add a choice in grub to shutdown the pc?

right now my grub has two choices. winxp and ubuntu. but i wanna add a third choice that could shutdown the pc. i was wondering if that was possible.

Not to sound silly, but have you tried the power button? That's why I use.

When grub starts, there are no file systems mounted. If there are no filesystems mounted, it's kinda hard to corrupt them.

Also, soft shutdowns generally rely on APC hooks from the OS. Unless you can find something that can create those hooks from a DOS partition maybe, the only thing I could think of would be to create a custom kernel with an init script that simply shuts down the system.

Or, there's that power button.

Why would you want to shut down your computer immediately after booting up?

Not that you shouldn't have the choice, but still...

If you have a Grub menu then press c will drop you into a Grub prompt.

Type "help" will list all the commands you can run at a Grub prompt.

Code:
Halt
is the command to shut down the PC. You can put it in the menu.lst

Like I said Grub is a mini operating system and nobody bothers to stretch it. What a shame.

Grub runs faster than anything on earth too!
