Wine configuration
I apologise in advance if this is too basic but believe me, I have tried to sort it myself and failed dismally.

I'm new to Linux and settled oni PCLinuxOS - Big Daddy - as suitable for everything I need. I have an Ubuntu disk and may give it a go when I find some hard disk space but for the time being, Big Daddy is sufficient.

I added Wine in an attempt to get some form of AOL installation into Linux - more as a technical exercise than a need. My problem is that although I can get things with a simple path like Notepad to work in Wine, whenever I type anything into Terminal with a space, it fails. I've tried underscore, space, hyphen, full stop and ignoring the space altogether but nothing seems to work. I get "Wine cannot find" every time.

The version of AOL I put on is 5.0 so it doesn't go into Program Files - it just sits in C:\ but the Windows folder name inclues a space so the Linux syntax, as I understand it, should be wine c:\\aol 5.0\\aol.exe.

Can anyone please put me right on this one?

Thanks.

Forget that "intermediate" bit - that definitely doesn't refer to me where Linux is concerned!

To access things from the terminal that have spaces, use a backslash+space, like
Code:
cd My\ Documents

Thanks for that - one of the few characters I hadn't tried. However, I'm still in trouble. Even though I'm now seeing the correct Windows syntax in the error message, I do still get the error message - Wine cannot find etc.

I'm using the syntax wine c:\\program\ files\\skype\\phone\\skype.exe on a programme I'm trying to bring across and then I see the correct Windows path c:\program files\skype\phone\skype.exe as part of the cannot fifnd message.

If there was another reason for the failure, would Linux Terminal still use the same syntax?

Not all Windows programs work well (or work at all) under WINE.

With wine paths I think you need to do
Code:
wine /actual/path/in/filesystem/foo.exe
Wine's "C drive" root is usually in your home directory in a path like
Code:
/home/youruserid/.wine/c_drive
so try doing
Code:
wine ~/.wine/c_drive/Program\ Files/skype/phone/skype.exe
It's also important to note that Linux is case sensitive, even in wine's pathnames.(Notice the P and F in Program Files)

No guarantees here, since I'm very unfamiliar with wine(I've installed it but never actually used more than once or twice), but good luck with it.

I don't know much about skype, but I'd be kind of surprised if there's not a native Linux app that can use the service. Try googling around for something like that and I'm sure you'll save a bit of headache.

Edit: Also, you can make a shell script to run it and put it in ~/bin, so you just have to type "skype" or something like that, instead of "wine pathname/blah/blah" every single time.

I think that just explained it all. I should have thought that one for myelf as that was the case years back in some DOS versions. Oh! how easily they forget!
