Red face Newbie questions
Yes, I know I should probably check to see if these questions have been answered before but here goes anyway. I installed Ubuntu on a Windows machine whose OS I completely hosed. I've got a LAN consisting of a Mac OS X machine, a Windows laptop W2K Pro and the Ubuntu desktop. The Mac doesn't even see the Linux box. The Linux box sees both other machines but can't seem to access either one. So how do I get this to work? I guess i should be happy they can all share the same internet connection. One other thing, I downloaded Avast antivirus for Linux and extracted it but I can't seem to get it to run. What am I missing? Is there something I need to do from the terminal?

As far as your other computers "seeing" your Linux box, you'll need to install and configure something called Samba. Just Google it a bit and you'll have more tutorials and walk-throughs than you'll know what to do with.

For the antivirus program, refer to
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=229128

Good luck and let me know if you have more questions!

Well I went to the forum in question but I must be missing something here. This is what I tried to do in the terminal:

victor@ubuntu:~$ sudo dpkg -avast.deb
Password:
Sorry, try again.
Password:
dpkg: unknown option -v

Type dpkg --help for help about installing and deinstalling packages[*];
Use `dselect' or `aptitude' for user-friendly package management;
Type dpkg -Dhelp for a list of dpkg debug flag values;
Type dpkg --force-help for a list of forcing options;
Type dpkg-deb --help for help about manipulating *.deb files;
Type dpkg --licence for copyright licence and lack of warranty (GNU GPL)[*].

Options marked[*] produce a lot of output - pipe it through `less' or `more' !
victor@ubuntu:~$ cd /usr/lib/avast4workstation/share/avast/desktop
bash: cd: /usr/lib/avast4workstation/share/avast/desktop: No such file or directory
victor@ubuntu:~$ sudo ./install-desktop-entries.sh install
sudo: ./install-desktop-entries.sh: command not found

Well now that my total lack of knowledge about things linux is out there for all to see, are there any suggestions?

Just fire up Synaptic and do a Search for clamav. I'm pretty sure it's available in the main repositories.

Actually
Actually, I discovered that this distro comes with Aegis, but you have to install it, so I did. However, it doesn't appear in my Applications drop down list and I don't know how to start it up, except to maybe start it from Terminal. It also comes with Samba, which I installed and was able to configure with some degree of success. The Linux box can see both the Mac and the Windows machine; it can access shares on the Windows but not the Mac. The Mac still doesn't see the Linux box at all though it can access shares on the Windows box. I'm a liitle confused because I've got Samba installed on the Mac as well. It probably takes a little more manual editing than I know how to do to get it all to work. Ideally, I'd like to be able to print from the Windows and Linux boxes to the printer attached to the Mac, but I can't seem to get it configured correctly for that. Anyway, I'm working with it and trying to learn it. Can anyone suggest a good downloadable manual?

Try ubuntuforums.org for loads of discussion and walkthroughs. Chances are, if you've run into a particular problem, someone else has too, so there are lots of answers to be found there.

As for installing avast from a .deb, you should have had the "-i" option in dpkg before the filename. That first typo made dpkg abort, so there was nothing for the rest fo the commands to work with, so they too crashed or aborted.

Smile Pat on the back
Not that you guys particularly car but I do. I finally managed to get SMB configured and now I can browse shares from any box to the other. My Mac sees and can browse both the Linux and Windows, the Linux can now browse the Mac box and the same for the Windows. I must admit I still find it more difficult than dealing with Windows and Mac. So a pat on the the back for the Newbie, that;s would be me.

clenny -
Good job. Samba confounded me a year ago when I'd first installed Linux, and I haven't revisited the subject since.
