To me to install the first Linux you need to have two two partitions available.

(1) Resize the har disk to create space for two partitions. One for Linux 5Gb or 10Gb if you have space and another partition for Swap of say between 0.5 to 1Gb. To resize WIndows partitions it is best done by WIndows software. However if you haven't got special software like Ghost or Acronis then download Linux Live CD "Gparted" or "Parted Magic" as there are free and pretty reliable with the latest versions. You can also familar with the Linux's way of calling the partitions.

(2) The two partition type should be 83 and 82 respectively. They are best done with a Linux Lve CD. The Live CD mentioned above is perfect for such a job. Standard Linux does not use Windows partitions for installation. Linux can boot from either a primary or a logical partition.

(3) During installation make sure the Linux installer use the partitions created. Let the installer format the two partitions. Ext3 filing format is standard for most Linux. IN a nutshell you use the large 5 or 10Gb partition for mounting the root ("/") of the Linux to be installed.

(4) Linux installer checks every partition for a boot loader and Windows will be automatically included for booting by any Linux boot loader. If it doesn't it is very easy to fix it.
