How do I see what version I have?
Hi, it's the newbie here again with another dumb question...
I'm trying to DL Automatrix and it looks like I have to choose between 386 and AMD 64.
Which one do I choose? I looked around my admin area and "About Ubuntu" and couldn't find anything there to tell me what I need.
Any help would be appreciated.
As a side note, the only reason I'm trying to DL this is to play MP3s. The MP I have doesn't seem to support this and I can't seem to find the codecs for it.
Thanks.

Smile version
That is based on what proccessor type is in your PC, and is it 32 or 64 bit, Intel or AMD? So since you have a pentium 4, choose the 386 platform.

In terminal, you can use the following commands:

Code:
uname -a
Your output of this command will be something like this:

Quote:
Linux ericsbane03 2.6.17.13 #1 Sat Sep 9 01:11:49 CDT 2006 i686 athlon-4 i386 GNU/Linux
*Note: This is output from my system.

Code:
cat /etc/*-release
This will give you output that tells you what distribution and version of Linux you're running.

Quote:
Slackware 11.0.0
*Note: Again... output from my system.

Oh, and as root in terminal:

Code:
lshw
This will give you a complete output of your system's hardware, including the microprocessor, which is what you're interested in most. That way you can see if it's 32 or 64 bit. In Ubuntu, you can run this command in terminal as sudo.

Luck!

OK, I did the codes vt suggested and something seems strange. The one code came up with AMD64. Isn't that an AMD proccessor? If thats what it means, then it's weird, because I use Intel.
I looked in my device manager and it even says -PCI Bridge>Intel...USB UHCI>Intel.
Am I wrong on this?

And 1 more thing...how do I get out of this after I get the info I need? The only way I can get back to my desktop is to hit the reset.
Thanks!

Can you post your output here, so we can see it. That would help.

Also, if you're entering those commands in the terminal (Gnome Terminal), just close the terminal when you're done.

OK, for starters... you're running a 32bit Intel platform, but you have the 64 bit AMD version of Ubuntu installed. I would wipe it clean. Go download the proper version of Ubuntu and then install fresh.

Thanks for everything Vtel. I'm not sure how that happened, but I'll take your advise and format and install the new Ubuntu when it comes out tomorrow.
I appreciate the help.

It's a little bit of extra trouble to have to redo everything, but believe me, it's the best way. You'll get a fresh new start with the proper installation. Don't sweat it... if you're relatively new to Linux, expect to trash your system and have to reinstall at least a couple times before you get it right.

I'm DEFINITELY speaking from experience. HAHA!
