Hi playme123,

The hal daemon is part of Linux kernel.

To google something like this in the future try: hal daemon +Linux

Here's is a link that explains about the hal daemon.

Your problem may be more related to your movie player than to the hal daemon.

What Linux distro are you using? What movie player?

Hi playme123,

The default totem movie player may not play all movie formats. What format were you trying to play - e.g. .mpg, .wmv? Totem will not play either.

To get .mpg movies to play, it is likely that you will have to either download a binary version of mplayer for wubi, or download both codecs and gcc in order to compile mplayer for wubi in order to play .mpg movies.

I don't know much about wubi, but I have posted other message threads in this forum - see the one about mplayer posted by clenny for more information on building mplayer and getting gcc which is Ubuntu related.

Wubi is an installer for Ubuntu - i.e. not a Linux distro in and of itself, and is Windows based and the project is in beta test currently - which means use at your own risk usually because it is not yet supported.

I would not try the above unless you commit to an actual Linux distro installation in its own bootable partition - i.e. definitely not with Wubi.

P.S. The reason you were probably ignored on the Ubuntu forums is that the program runs in Windows and is not an actual Linux distro. See more info about Wubi here.

Hi in response to your post in the ubuntu forums didnt mention that I was using wubi, have got all the current codecs and plugins gstreamer and so forth. Have the full version of ubuntu on my other tower, however when I went to install it on my slave drive on me main got a bit pannicked as it looked like it would wip everything of that drive to install it, and thats were I do my backups for windows over media apps do work ie kaffiene and rythombox and so forth and to be honest that will do me fine. Its just I want to know what the hal deamon was about and from what your link says its a kernal that identifies hardware

Hi playme123,

A daemon is a part of kernel software. HAL stands for Hardware Abstraction Layer and is an interface layer used to both hide the hardware interfaces and to make it more systematic to interface with the hardware for the rest of the kernel software in Linux. Windows has had its own HAL since WinNT. They are different HALs.

The hal daemon implements the HAL.

cheers tom,
I think us linux newbies just get a bit overwhelmed at first especailly with terms that we are unfamiliar with, I know linux is a learning curve, however I think with me and a few newbies we are prepared to learn but half the time we dont know were to start really. However in saying that in the tower with the full version of ubuntu(which will be connected to a lcd tv) all the app I need are all ready installed its mainly going to be used as a media pc. I do like ubuntu its good to know that you are using something that fewer people use than windows.
I am going to keep trying to learn more and you never know one day I might just get it and may even over advice (shock). Its just you can feel a bit overwhelmed ie always drove a car but just got on a motorbike for the first time kinda feel. Sorry for waffling on.
