Solved: Puppy Linux
I have a laptop with no hard drive. I downloaded puppy linux. I put the CD in the drive and on boot up I got a message: "Operating system not found". The boot sequence is set to CD-Rom.
Here's a picture of the files on the puppy linux CD:
Files

by the way:
it's a gateway solo 9100
150MHz processor.
64MB of ram.
and like i said no hard drive.

did you download a CD image, or did you just copy and paste the files?

if you just copy and pasted files to the cd and burned it, chances are you dont have any boot data on the cd drive, so its not seeing it as bootable.

Convince us by burning a different distro.

2.I'm not sure it boots to CD-Rom even though the boot sequence is set to Cd-Rom

Hi - Puppy Linux should boot just fine off your CD-ROM drive, assuming the CD itself is ok. Have you tried it in another PC to be sure it works? For info, the CD should contain 8 files totalling 92.7Mb, assuming you are using the most recent edition of Puppy (2.17).

If the laptop has a floppy drive, there is a utility available to force boot off CD media, should you need it. I have the link somewhere, just ask.

If you can get it to boot, Puppy is a good distribution and the fastest live CD I've ever used, considering it loads into a RAMdisk.

There are 8 files on the CD totaling 92.8MB. Could you give me the utility to force boot to CD. It the laptop can definitely boot to floppy.

Go to http://bootcd.narod.ru/index_e.htm and look for "bootable CD loader". Follow the instructions to make a floppy disk then try booting the laptop off it. It should look for a CD ROM device and attempt to boot the CD in the tray. Report how you went, ok?

I tried it and couldn't get it to work.
Error with the floppy: Remove non-system disks.
I try a second floppy with the same files.
This time i got and error: Remove all CD's or other media. Press and key to restart. I take out the floppy and leave the puppy linux cd in the drive: Operating system not found.

Hmm, not sure why disk shouldn't work - works fine for me. Your floppy should contain 5 files:
bcdl.bin (16kb)
bcdl_d.htm
bcdl_e.htm
bcdl_r.htm (instructions)
vide-cdd.sys (7.1kb)
Instructions are a bit short on detail, so if you're not sure you created the floppy correctly, you can do what I did and use RawWrite to create the floppy from the img file in the zip archive you downloaded. You can get RawWrite here: http://www.chrysocome.net/rawwrite . A bit of mucking about, I know, but worth it in the end.
