Question libdvdcss2 , madmp3 , general audio/video codec issue
totem:

error: no suitable plugin found to for dvd playback...do you want to search for a suitable plugin....found gstreamer... (installed gstreamer)... need Indeo 5...
error: playback requires a dvd source plugin which is not installed
error: you do not have a suitable plugin to play encrypted dvd

vlc:

just starts like its going to play the dvd, expands the window, and does nothing

mplayer:

can't even locate the dvd in the drive

I have the libdvdcss2 library installed.
I also d/l the mplayerhq.hu all-20061002.tar.bz2 file to obtain any codec multimedia may require, but I have no idea how to install it.

I copied them to /usr/lib/win32, and set an XANIM variable to a location pointing to the unzipped file, for mplayer to recognize.

mmm, i d/l the w32 codec pack from synaptic as well.

I'm stumped on the issue, as far as playback, the issue being obvious: NO PLAYBACK

another codec issue I'm having is with mp3 encoding/decoding for k3b to create an audio cd. now it just won't burn an audio cd.

i read a few things: setting up the mad mp3 library but I was unable to find a package for it (as pertains to k3b), as far as DVD play I have no clue because I don't believe I installed any other codec besides win32 and libdvdcss2 on my last installation, and I didn't have this playback issue.

Is there a folder where the "general" codec database is stored? I thought to try copying the mplayerhq.hu codecs to that location, and thinking it was the /us/lib/win32 folder I did, but it doesn't seem to have affected the usability of a dvd movie.

perhaps I need to modify permissions or something? This seems to be the one area I'm neglecting on Linux, I figure the sudo command is efficient enough.

Anyhow, hope someone can assist. Thanks.

Please elaborate your computer spec in your user account profile: include OS and version number, processor Intel, AMD? 32-bin vs 64-bit, video card model, etc.

Exclamation updated with your requested information
Ubuntu 6.06LTS (Dapper)
Pentium III 540 MHz (or something)
256 MB RAM
32-Bit
ATI Rage Pro II Graphics

Like I was saying, I hadn't had any problems when using Feisty Fawn 7.04, but I did something dumb to the system and had to reinstall, Dapper was the closest OS Disc I could find -- so I'm back on Dapper (plus I got the book).

What else? Oh, yeah I've run the DVD before, but now the gstreamer, w32 codecs, and even mplayerhq.hu file all-20061002.tar.bz2 doesn't seem to work. So to reiterate, I'm wondering if there is a "general database" of codec information for media players in Ubuntu that I can place these codecs from the file into.

So?

I hope that's enough information, as far as the user profile information you were asking about, I don't even know where that file is (new to Linux) so if you can tell me the location I can check it for you.

When adding new capabilities to Ubuntu, try to refrain from downloading files and learn how to use the following sequence:
1) From a command line terminal window, issue: sudo apt-get update
2) System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager will then have all of its repository information update from 1) above. Use the Search function to find mplayer, or w32codecs.

If there is nothing indicated in Synaptic Package Manager (SPM), then you need to then go into the /etc/apt directory and edit out the commented repositories for multiverse, etc. from debian, and then reissue the sudo apt-get command to get those packages made available to you. Then retry using SPM and Search for codec.

...
i use sudo apt-get install and wget sometimes, (not much).
i like to avoid spm because working on a legacy computer, the mngr doesn't load up very quickly.
but i've been adding repositories and things, thanks for the location on the /etc/apt information though.
I don't know why that is, personally.
also, by multiverse; etc. what do you mean? all the current repositories?

Hi Andy,

Look in the /etc/apt/sources.list file for multiverse.

Have you downloaded and regularly consult the Fiesty Starter Guide here? It contains some useful information even if you are using Dapper. Do not use Fiesty repository for Dapper updates.

Get used to the SPM - its use insures that whatever gets installed resolves dependencies - beginning to see the light?

I am unsure about this, but you might have to install the restricted drivers pack from the repository. I couldn't do anything with anything relating to media except .wav and .midi files. I read up and it turns out since Ubuntu is released in mutliple countries, there should be rules on which files should be freely distributed. This keeps things legal and such.

So not sure if this is related to your problem but it seems like it may have a hand in it.
