I'm trying to setup Squid proxy server, and in order to do so, I need to add the line visible_hostname to the squid.conf file. Thing is, that Ubuntu doesn't recognize the file type and won't open it. Rightclick-->properties ... type:unknown

how can I open that file?

you should open a terminal/console window and use editors like vi or joe. I like joe because it reminds me of WordStar.

Have you checked the permissions on the squid.conf file? They may be for root only.

If so, issue the command: sudo -i
which should give you root.

A funny thing about that, even when using sudo and although I've not tried modifying the boot scripts to allow root login, permissions don't seem to mean jack on my computer when they don't want to.
For instance I got locked out of MY USB drive (sorry my), I couldn't create a folder/write to it or anything.
It was owned by my group, with access/write permissions and it still wouldn't let me use it.
Then the /usb/sda drive changed to /dev/sda
very strange stuff to me.

Just FYI, on threads that are yours, there is a menu called 'Thread Tools' where you can select 'Mark Solved' when you want a thread closed.
I saw you wrote 'this is closed' a few times so I just thought I'd let you know.

Also, the squid.conf file is really useful. Check out squid-cache.org for tips on optimizing it.
