Linux based Vista & Mac?
My roomates thinks he knows everything and told me that both vista and mac osx are linux based and work just fine with each other. I told her that mac osx cannot write to ntfs formate, but he says, "i t can if you do it right." last time i checked hes wrong and linux, viasta, and mac are very different operating systems. Am i right or wrong on this?

Neither Windows or Mac OS X are based on Linux. Mac OS X has Unix underpinnings (BSD, I believe) and Linux has Unix influences and "flavor" but isn't "based" on it.

Windows has never been 'based' on any flavor of Unix, as far as I know. Some things the Windows kernel might do might be similar to Unix or borrowed from Unix but Windows isn't "based" on Unix even though many wish it would be.

Peace...

Linux is a kernel, and the Mac OsX is based on a Unix kernel, while Windows Vista is yet another generation of the series starting with Window NT - an entirely different kernel. Essentially, all three have different kernels.

Being able to read/write between Linux-Windows depends on having disk driver compatibility in the kernel. Ask your "knowledgable" roomates (him/her) what exactly they mean about "do it right" and ask them for a demonstration on their computers - i.e. ask for the details of the setup.

http://www.levenez.com/unix/

The URL above shows the history of UNIX, Linux, BSD and Mac and how they are related.

Windows NT, Pista or otherwise are not here.

Is your roommate cute? If yes, tell her she's right.
