Clients can't dowload zips if they have a MAC
Hi,

I have a set of links on a webpage that allows clients to acces our linuxserver and download zipped files.

I have no trouble downloading on PC however the Mac folk around me click the links and nothing happens...?

I moved the files to a different server and it was fine.

Can someone suggest a possible reason for this.

Thanks
Julz

The web server on the Linux server might not have had the proper MIME type setup for ZIP files. So, the browser on Mac OS didn't know what to do with the ZIP file when it was downloaded. I would start with comparing the MIME type definitions on the web server that worked and the web server that didn't.

Peace...

Ok Tomdkat makes sense as it's a new inhouse Linux Box running Ubuntu... can you please suggest where I would need to look for MIME def config. The webserver that worked is an offsite host so naturally they will be set up correctly.

Such an amateur.

Look for the Apache "httpd.conf" file. If you're not sure where it is, run this command in a terminal window or remote login to the server:

$ find / -name "httpd.conf"

Read up on the mod_mime Apache module. Here is a sample from my httpd.conf (for Apache 2.2.4 running on my home machine (64-bit Ubuntu)):
Code:
<IfModule mime_module>
    #
    # TypesConfig points to the file containing the list of mappings from
    # filename extension to MIME-type.
    #
    TypesConfig conf/mime.types

    #
    # AddType allows you to add to or override the MIME configuration
    # file specified in TypesConfig for specific file types.
    #
    #AddType application/x-gzip .tgz
    #
    # AddEncoding allows you to have certain browsers uncompress
    # information on the fly. Note: Not all browsers support this.
    #
    #AddEncoding x-compress .Z
    #AddEncoding x-gzip .gz .tgz
    #
    # If the AddEncoding directives above are commented-out, then you
    # probably should define those extensions to indicate media types:
    #
    AddType application/x-compress .Z
    AddType application/x-gzip .gz .tgz
</IfModule>
My "mime.types" file already has a type for ZIP defined as follows:

application/zip zip

Make sure your Apache server is setup accordingly.

Peace...
