sabayon/beryl install
i just installed sabayon x86-64 3.4-f. on the live dvd i was able to do the cubelike desktop and the windows had cool effects when dragging them, but when i installed and booted off my hard drive it would do it anymore. i have done some searching and read about some md5sum problems being the issue, but im looking for help im new to linux and i want to learn about it. i really want to get it working with the effects you see on other peoples desktops who use beryl. i appreciate any help, thank you.

Do you have the reference to the "md5sum" issue? It'll probably make sense to us, I can't find a reference to it, to explain what they had found out.

The MD5SUM is to verify your download. It is sensible also to verify your burnt CD, using the burner program verification feature, or under Linux, mounting the newly burnt CD, and running the md5sum program. The friendliest way for a distro to permit file verification, is by 1 file holding all md5sums, which can be checked simply by "md5sum -c file.md5sums".

Many include a "Test CD" or even better, "Test CD & then Boot".

This may seem pessimistic, but media errors are actually common, especially if you burn to disk at high speed, also many machines seem to have issues reading disks created by other machines at faster speeds. Sorry, I do not know why, just that CDR & CDRW media problems seems to commonly cause threads on the net.

evga 8800 - Does that mean you have an NVidia GS 8800 graphics card?
In that case, you need to install the driver, like it says on Wiki.

To check simply, in terminal/console window :

$ grep 'Driver.*nv" /etc/X11/xorg.conf

If it says : Driver "nv" then you need to change that to "nvidia" like it says in the Wiki.

Sabayon as a source based distro, may prove quite a lot of work to maintain, compared to something like Ubuntu 7.10, or even Sidux (Debian unstable aka "Sid"). OpenSuSE 10.3 has an excellent KDE implemention (includes some upcoming KDE4 features), and PC Linux OS seems to be well liked by new Linux users.
