http://puppylinux.org/user/news.php?readmore=50 says Puppy supports "Slackware" packages, so you should be able to find a packaged "apache" or alternative, if Puppy doesn't produce it.

Try looking for :

Apache is the most used Web server software worldwide.

Thttpd is a very compact no-frills httpd serving daemon that can handle very high loads.
While lacking many of the advanced features of Roxen or Apache, thttpd operates without forking and is extremely efficient in memory use. Basic support for cgi scripts, authentication, and ssi is provided for. Advanced features include the ability to throttle traffic.

Lighttpd is a secure, fast, compliant, and very flexible Web server that has been optimized for high-performance environments. It has a very low memory footprint compared to other Web servers and takes care of CPU load. Its advanced feature set (FastCGI, CGI, Auth, Output-Compression, URL-Rewriting, and more) makes lighttpd the perfect Web server software for every server that is suffering load problems.

There's probably some perl or python script webservers for simple applications to. You can run a webserver on a different port, so it doesn't need root access on startup. URLs let you specify the port number (normally 80).

The worst thing about puppy seems to be the web site organisation and incomplete documentation (previous hunt for release notes, went through loads of chaotic blogs and tinkered pages, as the developer tries things out).

Impressive!

I am still new to GNU/Linux but wanted to start a small WEB Server
(as part of my journey on learning Linux).

Just want to try, and the thing is ...I wanted it to be SMALL(minimalistic eh!) and FREE!

And I found this Puppy/DSL to be small. But I do not have an idea which is which and where to start.

I thought no one would care to answer my question ...but here is a pro!

lighttpd ...really LIGHT. Checking it out.

yes you're a pro!
how I wish you could help me setup my SMALL WEB Server

LINKS about WEB SERVERS running on a "small" GNU/Linux would be great.

thanks a lot!

Once you have a daemon running, and system has a swap space (or file) configured, then you just have a GNU/Linux. You only need to add RAM to improve performance. free(1) http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=lin...UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 tells you how RAM is used, and vmstat(8) Report virtual memory statistics - Linux man page http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=lin...UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

Sticking a few static HTML pages, (or even simple CGI) won't be a problem, just read the starter docs on the web server you choose. I have run a webserver on a i486 running Win95 with 16MB RAM, it was slow but it worked! The same box, installed with a text mode minimal Linux would have been fast enough for any browser.

Have a go, read the docs and then ask questions if you get stuck. This link looks promising http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...G=Search&meta=

BTW Ignore some of the comments from years ago, that you may see when lighttpd was newly developed softare, it's widely deployed according to Netcraft, and is included in big commercial distro.

Update : whilst installing a web server, and configuring is a good educational idea, I've just spotted this, DSL supports Web server off Live CD http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ "Damn Small also has the ability to act as an SSH/FTP/HTTPD server right off of a live CD."

Looked at DSL while back but lost interest, because of emphasis on cramming lots of stuff into small footprint; aimed at General Purpose usage.
