Solved: Linux for Laptops
Hi,

I am wanting to try out Linux and see how it works. I have a Toshiba Satellite M45-s269. I can go to the Toshiba website to get the drivers that I need. What I am wanting to know is will it run on my laptop? I did some research and could not find my model number on the web page but on another one it said all models would support it. I am wanting to be able to type in English, Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai, French and Italian. Also I like to use Yahoo, AOL, Skype, MSN and QQ chat programs. So it is important that the OS supports these function as well as being able to support the Toshiba drivers for my laptop. Can you suggest what edition I need to be able to do all the things I am looking to do? Thanks,

Get a copy of the linux distro that you are interested in & download the live cd. With the live cd you boot from the cd with out affecting your current OS, if you like it, you can install it at your leisure. Try PCLinuxOS 2007

PS: Running the live cd is a bit slower than the real environment.

A linux distribution, Like PCLinux, Ubuntu, etc. A live cd allows you to boot from it and try the whole operating system without having to install anything.

I don't think there is a 2008 version of PCLinux yet, But the 2007 one works just fine.
So take your pick, there are a lot of different ones out there.

A list of Linux distros and screenshots can be found Here

(addition) There is a PCLinuxOS 2008 MiniMe available which is a smaller download. But I didn't see a full version.

I have a Toshiba Tecra A5S 416 and found that when running the live CD for PCLinuxOS, all of the required drivers were on the Linux disc. All I had to do to configure my laptop was type in my WEP key for my secured router and I was able to surf the net wirelessly.

If the OS doesn't have the programs you wish to use to chat, you might want to try and check out a package manager. Also it might be worth it to check the programs webbies, some might have a linux installation file.

If you are going to use Linux on your laptop, be aware that ACPI is very buggy which is pretty critical for a laptop. The suspend to ram and suspend to disk options are very difficult to downright impossible to get configured to work correctly. I have tried most of the most popular Distros and have found none that worked reliably on my Gateway Tablet PC. I love Linux on desktops, I have Linux Mint on my garage computer, but for a laptop, I will wait till they correct the power issues.

Thanks for all the info and help! I have a Toshiba and one guy said he got it to run on his laptop. My new problem is that after downloading the file and burning it I cannot get it to run. When I open it I can see all the files but when I click on individual ones nothing happens or it says cannot open and I never can see a run command on the menu. Any suggestions?! Thanks,

It sounds to me like you burnt the image as a data disc and not an image disc. You must burn the image file as an image which will make the resulting disc bootable. I use Nero burn to do this but many other burning programs will do the same thing.
