Reading from a CD-Rom drive
I've had Fedora installed for about 3 hours now, and I've understood very little, so please bear with me.

I want to install KDE, so I selected it from the Fedora Add/Remove software thing, fine, but now it wants me to insert the Fedora 8 CD-rom. I did so, but it won't work. I've created a directory /mnt/cdrom, but

[root@localhost mnt]# mount /dev/hda /mnt/cdrom
mount: special device /dev/hda does not exist
[root@localhost mnt]# mount /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom
mount: special device /dev/hdb does not exist
[root@localhost mnt]# mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom
mount: special device /dev/hdc does not exist
[root@localhost mnt]# mount /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom
mount: special device /dev/hdd does not exist

What am I supposed to do? I presume I'm meant to mount the CD to let Fedora read it, but I can't even do that?

Sorry if this is a really stupid thing to ask, it wouldn't be the first time in the 3 1/2 hours of today

Try this
Code:
/sbin/mount /dev/cd0 /mnt/cdrom
The device names can be seen in /dev

I would recommend checking your hardware configuration (there should be a system tool to do that with Fedora) to make sure that the actual device is /dev/cd0. If not, it may be /dev/scd0.

Yeah I keep looking for something like that (a device manager of sorts), haven't really found it though.

I'm starting to reconsider Fedora in many ways actually, but I haven't given up on it yet. I think I need a while to run Ubuntu and Fedora together and make my mind up over some time.

Would it be possible to boot into windows and split the ext3 partition into two using partitioning software, then install ubuntu onto the 'new' partition? Would I need to make two swap partitions as well? Also, while I'm on the topic, is it possible to get a linux install to recognise an Intel ICH9 RAID array? It would be NTFS so I'm not too worried about using it tonnes, but it would be nice to be able to access my music libraries and so on, rather than saving the whole lot twice?

I do not think you need to mount any cdrom before you install additional software, make sure the cdrom you are using is the right one. If that is not working for you you can download the specific pakages online
